History

1969

The 75th Missouri General Assembly approved legislation to support individuals with developmental disabilities. The Senate Bill 40 authorized any county in Missouri to levy up to $0.20 per $100 in valuation property tax to support the legislation.

1978

The Johnson County Commission appointed the first directors to the Johnson County Board of Directors to “establish, improve, and/or maintain a sheltered workshop, and/or residence facility, and/or related services for developmentally disabled or handicapped persons.”

2009

Johnson County Board of Services entered into a contract with the Missouri Department of Mental Health to provide Targeted Case Management to individuals with developmental disabilities.

2021

Johnson County Board of Services launched the Family Navigation Program, our intake program designed to help individuals and families navigate the state intake process. Through this program, individuals are paired with a Community Resource Specialist who walks alongside them step by step until intake is completed. This ensures that families receive support, guidance, and advocacy from the very beginning of their journey.

Johnson County Board of Services officially added the Informational Specialist (IS) Program to our contract. While we were already supporting non-Medicaid individuals and families, adding IS meant those families no longer had to complete an annual plan for services they were not eligible to receive. This change made the process easier and more efficient for families while allowing us to continue providing guidance and resources to more people in our community.
